About the product

Leon’s farm, Acacia Hills, was named the winner of a private auction in Tanzania organized by Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE). Leon’s story embodies the history of coffee production in Northern Tanzania while also vividly reflecting the future of specialty coffee in the country.

The history of coffee in Northern Tanzania began in the 19th century. Coffee trees were brought to the region from Réunion Island near Madagascar, and German settlers, who occupied the country at the time, developed the coffee industry there. The soil in Oldeani is ideal for coffee cultivation. Leon restored the abandoned farm and began planting high-quality coffee varieties, including Kent, SL28, Geisha, and Pacamara. Acacia Hills Farm blends beautifully into the ridge of Mount Oldeani.

The coffee cherries are first sorted in the fields before being transported to the washing station for depulping. After depulping, an open fermentation process begins, lasting approximately 12–13 hours. Once the coffee is properly fermented, the fermentation level is checked before the coffee is washed. The drying process on raised African beds takes around 13–16 days, depending on weather conditions, until the parchment reaches a moisture content of 12% before being moved to the drying facility.

Tanzania Acacia Hills is a naturally processed blend of varieties from Leon’s farm. The cup profile features a delicate almond-like body with honey sweetness. You can find notes of strawberries, currants, and a floral finish. The blend is primarily composed of Kent variety beans, followed by Geisha, Pacamara, Castillo, Sachimor, and Batian. It is the true essence of Leon’s farm.
